Welcome to Season 5 of my Best Matches series: where I look at the best matches of a certain wrestler. This season I look at one of the best wrestling reinventors of all time (my opinion, of course, haha) and distant family member Chris Jericho (no proof of that, just that his real-life surname is Irvine so you never know haha).
I'll look at his time in WCW, his battles in the 2000s with the likes of Triple and The Rock, to his late WWE career, his time at New Japan etc. If you want to look at my previous series then click on the link below.
(These posts will be once a week and not every day as in the previous series. So every Wednesday at 1 pm (UK Time) these reviews will be up)
Check out the last four seasons:
Kenny Omega (Season 1)
Becky Lynch (Season 2)
Stone Cold Steve Austin (Season 3)
Eddie Guerrero (Season 4)
Next, we look at Chris Jericho's Last PPV Match for Two Years when he faced John Cena at Summerslam 2005 for the WWE Championship.
Season 5 Episode Six
WWE Championship Match Chris Jericho vs. John Cena Summerslam 2005 • 21st August 2005

A pretty awesome match from both men here, and worthy of a WWE championship match at Summerslam. I love that it is pretty clear that it was meant to put Cena over and make him look great as Jericho controlled most of the match and showed really how great he is.
Cena was still in his first title reign and I forgot how young Cena was back then and he played his part as the underdog champ well. The crowd were totally up for this match and there were times where you thought that Jericho was going to get the win. Some of the counters were pretty awesome and that finish with Cena counters a tilt a whirl into the FU (The better name than the AA haha) for the win was great and I love a match that ends with a nowhere finishing move.
Not much more to say for this match other than it was a fun ride and worth watching for 15 minutes if you have some time but should have gone on for another 5. But weird watching this match knowing that this was Jericho's last PPV match for 2 years as he took a hiatus at this point (In the storyline he was fired by Eric Bischoff the next night).
But overall I would check this match out more for Jericho showing you how good he is at controlling a match and see a young John Cena before became the greatest heel in WWE history (I’m joking of course haha). But as Summerslam is coming up you should put this match on your watchlist.
Verdict: 8 out of 10
