Welcome to Season 3 of my Best Matches series: where I look at some of Stone Cold Steve Austin's Greatest Matches from him being Stunning Steve Austin to Raising Hell on Mr McMahan during the Attitude Era. I got some of these matches of the Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin DVD which was released in 2007.

So next we look at the famous WWF Intercontinental Championship Match at Summerslam 97 where he takes on Owen Hart at Summerslam 97.

Season 3 Episode Five

Intercontinental Championship Match Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Owen Hart SummerSlam • August 3, 1997

The sad truth about this match is that it's only remembered for the botched Tombstone Piledriver by Owen straight on top of Austin's head, which took years off Austin's career. The match, in general, was turning into a classic with both men working well together.

The storytelling worked with both men's strengths, with Austin being the brawler and Owen being the Technical wizard, with Austin punching his way to victory and Owen working on Austin Legs and Neck ( I miss this type of wrestling where it was more of a battle of wits).

The Kiss My Ass stipulation wasn't needed as fighting for the Intercontinental Title was enough. It's sad that we never got to see Austin have a run with the IC Title because of the neck injury.

But give them credit, on the way they ended the match and I like Owen Taunting the crowd while they check on Stone Cold. The roll-up was soppy but it got the result that was needed, and I think if this match finished the way that was planned it would be up there with the best IC Title Matches of all time.

Verdict: 8 out of 10
