Welcome to Season 3 of my Best Matches series: where I look at some of Stone Cold Steve Austin's Greatest Matches from him being Stunning Steve Austin to Raising Hell on Mr McMahan during the Attitude Era. I got some of these matches of the Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin DVD which was released in 2007.
Check out the last two seasons:
Kenny Omega (Season 1)
Becky Lynch (Season 2)
So next we look at his Number One Contenders Match for the WWF Title against Bret Hart at Survivor Series 96.
Season 3 Episode Three
#1 Contender Match for the WWF Championship Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart
Survivor Series • November 17, 1996

What a fight that was, I love that Bret's hand-picked him as he thought he was the best wrestler at the time and Austin did prove it in this match. I love the storytelling with most of the match Stone Cold being in control with Bret trying to survive which works for the PPV name (Which is nice by the way haha).
They really made Austin look like a real threat here and showed that they were serious when trying to make Austin a star. I love the slingshot on Bret onto the Spanish announce table (Always the Spanish announce table, even JR said it haha) and then the elbow onto Bret from the apron.
But the finish with Stone Cold was so fixed on getting Bret to tap, even using the Million Dollar Dream submission to get the win. But Bret outsmarted Steve using the turnbuckle and pushes off and gets the pin for the win, and showed that Austin is good but isn’t there just yet but classic wrestling booking here. If you go by the crowd reaction you start to see they were getting behind Austin.
Verdict: 8 out of 10
