Welcome to Season 3 of my Best Matches series: where I look at some of Stone Cold Steve Austin's Greatest Matches from him being Stunning Steve Austin to Raising Hell on Mr McMahan during the Attitude Era. I got some of these matches of the Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin DVD which was released in 2007.
Check out the last two seasons:
Kenny Omega (Season 1)
Becky Lynch (Season 2)
So in this season finale, I look at the match that made Stone Cold and that was the submission match against Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13.
Season 3 Episode Twelve
Submission Match (With Ken Shamrock as Special Guest Referee) Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart WrestleMania 13 • March 23, 1997

What a way to end season three of my best matches series, with the match that made the Stone Cold Steve Austin we know and love, and has one of the best double turns in the company's history (I don’t think they have ever done one as good as this haha).
This was a simple story which was excellently executed with both men just trying to wear down each other with Bret working on Austin’s leg, and Austin on Bret's back. I love the way that the more the match continues, the more the crowd turn on Bret and you can feel it with his action, for example, the use of the chair on Austin's leg later on in the match.
I love that they didn’t really use any submissions until the end. But my oh my, that ending was so good with Austin, a bloody mess, not giving up, with as hard as Bret locked in that sharpshooter Stone Cold would not quit, and it took the pain being too much for the match to end and for Bret to get the victory.
Brilliant in every way and it touches on what wrestling is - you relate too and want to be that character you see on TV and in the ring, and Austin was that character at the right time to do that. The character he showed in this ring related to people so much, that it turned a tide of a rating war and gave us the second golden age of pro wrestling, all because one man didn’t want to quit.
This is why this was chosen for the series finale because it perfectly shows what Stone Cold Steve Austin was and why he was loved so much by so many people. If you haven't already, you should check this match out.
Verdict: 10 out of 10
