Welcome to Season 3 of my Best Matches series: where I look at some of Stone Cold Steve Austin's Greatest Matches from him being Stunning Steve Austin to Raising Hell on Mr McMahan during the Attitude Era. I got some of these matches of the Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin DVD which was released in 2007.
Check out the last two seasons:
Kenny Omega (Season 1)
Becky Lynch (Season 2)
So next we look at Austin's most well-known match of all time, where he took on The Rock in a No DQ Match for the WWF Title at WrestleMania X-Seven
Season 3 Episode Eleven
No Disqualification WWF Championship Match Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock WrestleMania X-Seven • April 1, 2001

There are two matches that come to mind when you think of Stone Cold Steve Austin and this is one of them. What can you say about this other than this is the Greatest WrestleMania main event of all time (My opinion of course haha). I mean Jesus this match was incredible, and you forgot how good the chemistry between Austin and The Rock was and how good they worked together.
This is an example of a match where everything went right from pacing to crowd involvement - I mean everything worked here. From the NODQ stipulation that no one knew who added it until the end, the aggression of Austin with those chair shots on The Rock was vicious and at the time was hard to watch.
I had to bring it up, but how amazing were Austin and The Rock selling in this match, from the way The Rock sold Austin Stunner (That always gave me a pop when I saw it haha), to the look on Stone Cold eyes when The Rock kept kicking out, was top-notch stuff. But that briefly talk about the elephant in the room, which is Austin Heel Turn.
The famous line ‘This is when people stop watching WWF’ isn't wrong - a lot of people stop watching after this. But hindsight is a beautiful thing and they probably shouldn’t have turned him heel, with The Rock leaving to film a movie and not really having anyone for him to fight at his level, it was doomed to fail (It did have some really good moments).
But storywise it was the natural progression of Austin's story with him being so desperate to recatch the WWF Title that he would make a deal with the devil himself Vince McMahon to do it. But JR reaction when Austin stook Vince's hand was pure gold and showed why JR commentary during this era also made moments like this feel important and have weight.
But I could write a whole essay of this match and the heel turn itself haha. But this is a must-watch if you are new to professional wrestling and need a template of a perfect main event - this is it.
Verdict: 10 out of 10
