Welcome to Season 5 of my Best Matches series: where I look at the best matches of a certain wrestler. This season I look at one of the best wrestling reinventors of all time (my opinion, of course, haha) and distant family member Chris Jericho (no proof of that, just that his real-life surname is Irvine so you never know haha).
I'll look at his time in WCW, his battles in the 2000s with the likes of Triple and The Rock, to his late WWE career, his time at New Japan etc. If you want to look at my previous series then click on the link below.
(These posts will be once a week and not every day as in the previous series. So every Wednesday at 1 pm (UK Time) these reviews will be up)
Check out the last four seasons:
Kenny Omega (Season 1)
Becky Lynch (Season 2)
Stone Cold Steve Austin (Season 3)
Eddie Guerrero (Season 4)
Next, we look at Chris Jericho's first NJPW match in almost 10 years, when he faced Kenny Omega in a No Disqualification Match for the IWGP United States Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 12.
Season 5 Episode Ten
No Disqualification Match for the IWGP United States Championship Chris Jericho vs. Kenny Omega Wrestle Kingdom 12 • 8th January 2018

It is still as great as I remember when I first watched it two years ago. This was the best match Chris Jericho had done for years. It did feel like he was allowed to go a bit more vicious than he would be allowed to do with WWE. I love that Jericho used the heel tactics that would be normal in Western audiences, which didn't happen in Japan like attacking the ref etc to get more heat, which is a great move.
The No NQ stipulations helped Jericho as well as I can remember that some people were worried if Jericho can handle the New Japan style and the stipulations helped ease into it.
It felt like war and had everything with table spot, head and blood spots you name it, it had it. Omega was great and was a great first opponent for Jericho to face and he took a lot of bumps to make Jericho look amazing.
Overall, this is what personal matchups should be and they really use the stipulations to its fullest effect. It lived up to the expectations we all had for the match, great stuff here. If you want an inroad into New Japan Pro Wrestling then watch this match you won't regret it.
Verdict: 9 out of 10
